Shelved with oversized manuscript volumes. · To John Murray, publisher : 2 autograph letters signed : -- 29 Mar 1840 : (MISC 1361) : answering a query about Cunningham's friend George Borrow, the writer. The identity of the recipient is not entirely certain. -- ca. June-Nov 1841 : (MISC 1349) : begins, "Mr. Thomas Wilkie porposes to call on you today at 2 o'clock to confer with you about the Life of his brother Sir David ..."

Born in Exeter and raised as a Unitarian, he began working at the age of thirteen, and actively sought to learn languages from travellers. Allan Cunningham was a Scottish author. Trained as a stonemason, he made a name for himself by passing off his own poetry as a collection of traditional Scottish ballads. As a professional man of letters, he had diverse interests, writing plays, novels, short stories, collecting and editing anthologies, and writing biographies and other nonfiction, but was probably most successful as a poet.
